A Cafe with Vegan Sweets and Japanese Tea

Cafe Chairo(Shibuya, Tokyo)

Cafe Chairo is a vegan Japanese tea cafe located in Tokyo’s Omotesando district. It’s a place where you can enjoy vegan sweets that do not use dairy products along with Japanese tea. The cafe moved and reopened in 2021, relocating from Kichijoji.

The owner, James Brown, is originally from the United States. He previously worked as a manager at a Japanese tea cafe in Boston, USA, and was also involved in the tea business with a Canadian company. He’s a passionate lover of Japanese tea.

The sweets at Cafe Chairo are all handmade by James, who has researched vegan recipes extensively. Due to his own dairy allergy, he developed an interest in vegan sweets made entirely from plant-based ingredients.
The most popular item on the menu is the “Miso Dango” (miso-flavored rice dumplings). These dumplings are made to order, ensuring you get them fresh. They come with special sauces in matcha, hojicha, and caramel flavors, offering a delightful combination of textures and traditional Japanese flavors. Enjoy them alongside matcha lattes or hojicha lattes.

Other recommended items include the “Matcha An Muffin,” “Oshiruko” (sweet red bean soup with rice cakes), and “Daifuku” (rice cakes filled with sweet fillings).

The cafe, which is located in a renovated traditional Japanese house, offers comfortable tatami seating where you can relax and enjoy your tea time at your own pace.
