Tea house with a wide variety of tea

Mandaracha(Kyoto)

Located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area, Mandaracha is a tea house that embodies the essence of the city. Situated in a corner of a residential neighborhood just about a 6-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station and conveniently close to Gion, this tea house opened its doors in 2020.  It serves as a cafe and a tea leaf retailer, specializing in Japanese tea while also offering Taiwanese and Chinese tea.

The owner, Alexander, is a French national. Fascinated by tea during his time in China, he explored tea-producing regions in Japan after coming here, encountering numerous teas and producers. Through these experiences, his desire to “share the allure of Japanese tea with people both domestically and internationally” grew stronger, eventually leading to the establishment of Mandaracha.

A wide variety of tea from all over Japan

Within the store, Alexander personally explores tea estates nationwide, meticulously selecting tea leaves to offer. From regions as diverse as Kyushu’s Kumamoto and Saga to Kyoto, Nara, and Shizuoka, a wide array of tea is presented. With an extensive assortment of tea types and cultivars, the shop boasts an enchanting selection that invites patrons to revel in the diverse and profound realm of Japanese tea.

The tea that Alexander brews attentively within the store is exceptional. As you savor the tea, consider indulging in the precious tales woven around tea. The cafe menu also includes confections that complement the teas, allowing for delightful tea and food pairings.

A special experience in a comfortable space

While the interior exudes a Japanese ambiance, there’s a hint of an oriental atmosphere as well. Enveloped in the warmth of wood, the space provides a tranquil environment to engage with tea.

Mandaracha actively engages in collaborations with artists, hosting live performances featuring instruments such as the piano and traditional musical instruments. Amidst a serene atmosphere, you can relish beautiful performances while enjoying your tea. Stay updated on event information through their social media channels.
