Zen Kashoin Kyoto Muromachi Main Store is a confectionery establishment located on Muromachi Street in Kyoto city. It opened in 2009 after renovating a 300-year-old Kyoto machiya built during the Edo period.
Within its spacious interior, you’ll find spaces for confectionery sales, a tea room, galleries, a confectionery workshop, and a central courtyard. You can enjoy a variety of confections that are meticulously crafted with a focus on production methods and ingredients.
Among them, the most popular is the “Zen Castella,” a paper-baked castella cake baked in-house. It features the richness of eggs from chickens raised on Tamba black beans, resulting in a moist and flavorful texture. Don’t miss the seasonal offerings like the matcha and chocolate-flavored variations of the “Zen Castella.”
In addition, a diverse array of confections that blend Japanese and Western influences are available, including dorayaki, waffles, and rusks.
At the tea room called Zen Cafe, which overlooks the garden, you can savor Japanese tea alongside the confections from Zen Kashoin.
A recommended option is the “Chatei no Zen”, which pairs popular confections with tea.
You can choose from options like sencha and matcha, with each cup carefully prepared by the staff.
The attached Gallery SUGATA serves as a contemporary gallery space. It hosts exhibitions featuring various artists and designers that catch the attention of Zen Kashoin.
