Combination of taiyaki and Japanese tea

Asakusa Naniwaya(Asakusa, Tokyo)

Located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Asakusa Naniwaya is a taiyaki (fish-shaped cake filled with sweet bean paste) shop. It is a branch of the renowned Naniwaya Sohonten in Tokyo’s Azabu-Juban district, often referred to as the originator of taiyaki specialty shops. Naniwaya Sohonten, along with Wakaba in Yotsuya, Tokyo, and Yanagiya in Ningyocho, Tokyo, is considered the three leading taiyaki establishments in Tokyo.

Their pride lies in the well-balanced sweetness of their bean paste. They meticulously cook Hokkaido red beans for 8 hours and knead them by hand. The thin outer shell is individually grilled over high heat to achieve a crispy texture.

At Asakusa Naniwaya, they also pay special attention to tea selection, offering fragrant teas that complement the bean paste. You can enjoy freshly procured sencha (Japanese green tea) from Nagasaki, hojicha (roasted green tea) from Nara, and matcha from Kyoto.

The sencha and hojicha are served with a teapot for steeping. When you ring the bell on the serving tray, they will add hot water to the teapot. The shop also has a cozy cafe space where you can leisurely enjoy your time.

Asakusa Naniwaya is famous for its fluffy shaved ice made with natural ice. During the summer, there are often long queues due to its popularity. Be sure to indulge in both taiyaki and shaved ice for a delightful experience.
