Specializing in fine hojicha from Kyushu

Hojicha-ya Tumugu(Fukuoka)

Hojicha(roasted green tea) Specialty Shop, Hojicha-ya Tumugu is located in Minami Ward, Fukuoka City. With the concept of “Brewing Happiness in a Cup,” the shop opened in September 2018. It’s situated about a 10-minute walk from Hirao Station on the Nishitetsu Omuta Line.

At Tumugu, they emphasize Kyushu-produced hojicha and offer a diverse range of 20 types of hojicha for sale.

From the time of opening, the shop has been showcasing hojicha from four producers: Ushijima Seicha from Fukuoka’s Yame, Miyazaki Sabou from Miyazaki’s Gokase, Ota Shigeki Seicha Kojo from Saga’s Ureshino, and Amano Seichaen from Kumamoto’s Minamata.

They offer four types of straight hojicha, each highlighting the distinct characteristics of the producers and 16 original blends of hojicha infused with herbs and spices.

The original blend products are developed collaboratively between each producer and Tumugu. For instance, Japanese Spicy Houjicha blends Amano Seichaen’s deeply roasted houjicha with dried Japanese pepper leaves (Nikke) and Sansho pepper. Another blend called Ginger-infused Hojicha combines Ota Shigeki Seicha Kojo’s  roasted houjicha with Saga and Nagasaki-grown ginger and Fukuoka-produced sweet tea. These teas showcase the unique qualities of hojicha using region-specific ingredients.

Additionally, limited edition blends appear according to the seasons, like hojicha blended with cherry blossoms in spring and kinmokusei (sweet olive) in winter. The shop also offers tasting services for various hojicha at the store.

The shop also provides a takeaway menu for hojicha, including hojicha ice cream.
